When professional help is delayed, these proven temporary measures can prevent further damage to your home.

When a storm damages your roof and professional help is days away, temporary protection becomes critical. Here are effective methods we recommend.

Safety first. Never climb on a wet, damaged, or steep roof. These methods can often be applied from ground level or attic.

Tarp Application

  • Use heavy-duty poly tarps rated for outdoor use
  • Extend tarp at least 4 feet beyond damage on all sides
  • Secure with sandbags or weighted boards
  • Never nail or screw through the tarp
  • Ensure water flows off, not under the tarp

From Inside the Attic

  • Place buckets under active leaks
  • Use plastic sheeting to direct water to buckets
  • Apply roofing cement to visible holes as temporary seal
  • Mark leak locations for repair crew

When Temporary Is Not Enough

If damage is extensive or you cannot safely apply temporary protection, evacuate affected rooms and call for emergency service.
